A double chin, also known as submental fat, is a common condition that occurs when a layer of fat that we all have, becomes more evident below your chin. A double chin is often associated with weight gain, but you do not have to be overweight to have one. Other causes include genetics and loose skin resulting from weight loss or simply from aging. Treatment for a double chin often will include some degree of weight loss as well as cosmetic procedures.  Cosmetic procedures that can be used include:

  • Injectables such as Kybella or Lipodissolve. These formulations contain natural bodily substances that cause the fat cells to lyse or rupture.  Over time the fat cell debris will be absorbed resulting in an improvement in the chin contour.  Several treatments will be necessary to get good results. Expect immediate swelling and mild discomfort that will last for up to a week.
  • Lasers can be used to both decrease the submental fat and tighten the skin. Laser energy destroys the fat cells and results in the formation of new skin collagen giving it more elasticity and tightness. Several treatments are needed over the course of 3-4 months.  There is no downtime with laser procedures.
  • Chin liposuction is another option. This is done in the office using a local anesthetic.  The results are more immediate.  There is a short period of downtime and we usually like patients to wear a chin strap for 3-5 days after the procedure.  This procedure is ideal for the patient with submental fat and overlying skin that still has good elasticity.  Loose lax skin will not fully recoil after liposuction so patient selection is key.
  • Finally, chin liposuction combined with a neck lift is the gold standard for optimal outcomes. This is done in the operating room and comes with the potential for more complications and downtime.  This is a better procedure for patients with a large chin fat pad and very loose skin.
